Withdrawing ETH to the wallet you use for NFTs: Ethereum mainnet or a layer 2?
When you withdraw ETH from an exchange, the network list often offers Ethereum itself and several layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism or Base. Your wallet address usually looks identical on all of them, which makes it easy to pick the cheapest option and assume the ETH will be wherever you need it. For NFT buyers that assumption fails often. A collection minted on one chain can only be bought with funds on that chain, and moving ETH between networks afterwards costs time and an extra fee.
Find out which chain the collection is on
Before opening the exchange, look at the collection or mint page on the marketplace you plan to use. It shows the chain, usually with a small network icon or label next to the price. If the mint page is on the creator's own site, check the contract address on a block explorer to confirm the network. Write the chain name down. That one word decides the withdrawal network you should choose.
Choose the matching network in the withdrawal form
On the exchange, go to Withdraw, select ETH and open the network list. Pick the entry for the chain you noted. Read the network fee and the amount that will arrive; withdrawals to Ethereum mainnet usually cost more than to a layer 2, but they put the ETH exactly where a mainnet collection needs it. If the chain you need is not listed, you will have to withdraw to a listed network and bridge, which adds a step and a fee you should factor in before buying.
Check the wallet is set to the same network
Open your wallet and switch it to the network you chose, or add that network if it is not yet shown. After the withdrawal confirms, the balance appears only when the wallet is viewing the right chain; looking at the wrong one makes it seem as though the ETH never arrived. Keep a little extra for gas on that chain, since buying, listing and approving NFTs each need a transaction of their own.
Test with a small amount and keep records
For a first withdrawal on a new network, send a small amount and wait for it to show in the wallet before sending the rest. Save the transaction ID from the exchange's withdrawal history. When you later sell an NFT and want the proceeds back on the exchange, the same rule applies in reverse: check which networks the exchange accepts for ETH deposits before sending anything from your wallet.

Scenario checkpoint
- Check the collection or mint page for the chain before choosing a withdrawal network.
- Select the matching network in the exchange withdrawal form and read the fee and arrival amount.
- Switch the wallet to the same network and keep extra ETH for gas on that chain.
- Send a small test first and confirm accepted deposit networks before moving proceeds back.
