NFT buyers and custody: what to keep on Binance and what belongs in your own wallet

Guides · 2026-10-14

NFT collecting mixes two custody worlds. You usually buy ETH or SOL on an exchange such as Binance, then move it to a self-custody wallet to mint or bid on a marketplace. The risks differ on each side. On Binance, the threat is account takeover. In your wallet, it is signing a malicious transaction on a fake mint page. A good plan separates funds so that neither failure can take everything at once.

Keep only working funds on Binance

Decide how much you need on the exchange for upcoming buys and keep only that there. Protect the account with an authenticator app, a passkey if offered, an anti-phishing code and the withdrawal whitelist under Security. Add each of your wallet addresses to the whitelist with a clear label, such as minting wallet or vault, and the correct network.

Use a separate minting wallet

Create a wallet used only for connecting to mint sites and marketplaces. Fund it from Binance with roughly what you plan to spend, not more. If you sign something harmful, the damage is limited to that balance. Review and revoke token approvals in that wallet regularly using the wallet's own approvals view or a reputable approval checker.

Keep valuable pieces in a vault wallet

Move NFTs you intend to hold, and any larger balance, to a separate vault wallet, ideally on a hardware device, that never connects to mint sites. Write its recovery phrase on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website. Transfers into the vault come from the minting wallet after a purchase, not the other way round.

Withdraw carefully from Binance

When moving funds from Binance, choose the network your wallet supports for that token; the Withdraw screen shows the live network fee and minimum. Send a small test to any new address, check the transaction ID in a block explorer, then send the rest. If a stranger in a Discord server urges you to move funds quickly for a mint, slow down; urgency is the usual sign of a trap.

A quick monthly custody check

Once a month, compare the three balances against your plan. Withdraw any excess that has built up on Binance, top the minting wallet back down to its working amount, and confirm the vault still shows every piece you expect. Open the Binance device list and remove anything unfamiliar. In the minting wallet, revoke approvals for collections you no longer trade. Ten minutes of this routine catches most problems while they are still small.
