Storing NFTs safely: wallets, recovery phrases and exchange accounts

Guides · 2026-10-07

When you hold an NFT in your own wallet, nobody else can reverse a mistake for you. The recovery phrase is the key to everything in that wallet, and every site you connect to is a potential source of risky approvals. Many collectors also keep funds on exchanges like Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget to buy tokens for minting, which adds a second set of accounts to protect. This guide explains a simple custody setup: how to store the recovery phrase, how to split wallets by purpose, and how to keep the exchange side secure so funds you move toward NFTs arrive safely.

Protect the recovery phrase

Write the recovery phrase on paper or a durable backup and keep it somewhere secure that only you, or a trusted person you choose, can reach. Never photograph it, store it in cloud notes or type it into a website. No genuine support team, marketplace or project will ever ask for it. Test recovery once on a spare device so you know the backup works.

A vault and a daily wallet

Keep your most valuable NFTs in a vault wallet that never connects to new sites and is used only to receive. Use a separate daily wallet for minting, trading and trying new projects, holding only what you are ready to risk. When you want to sell from the vault, move the item to the daily wallet first, or connect the vault only to a marketplace you have verified carefully.

Review approvals regularly

Over time, wallets collect approvals for marketplaces and contracts you no longer use. Every few months, review approvals with a reputable tool reached from a trusted source and revoke the ones you do not need. Small revocation fees are worth paying, especially for approvals covering whole collections.

Keep the exchange side tight

If you buy tokens on an exchange to fund mints, protect that account with a unique password, a strong second factor and a withdrawal whitelist that contains only your daily wallet. Confirm the network before each withdrawal and send a small test to any new address. Keep a record of transfers in case you need to trace a payment later.

Risk boundary: NFT Market Guide

Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
