Selling an NFT ecosystem token on an exchange: thin order books and how not to sell into the gap

Guides · 2026-10-17

Tokens connected to NFT marketplaces, games and collections are often airdropped to active users or earned through play. When the time comes to sell, many holders discover that the price on the chart is not the price they get. These tokens frequently trade on thin order books, so a market sell of a modest amount can drop several levels at once. The difference between a careful sale and a rushed one can easily exceed the trading fee many times over, and it is mostly avoidable.

Look at the bids before choosing an amount

Open the spot pair for the token, usually against USDT, and view the order book with as many levels as the app shows. Add up the quantity on the bid side near the best price. If your sale is larger than what sits there, a market order will consume those bids and continue lower. The spread between best bid and best ask is also a signal: a wide gap means even a small market order pays a visible premium.

Use limit orders and split the sale

Place a limit sell at or slightly above the best bid rather than a market order, and sell in parts over hours or days if the size is large relative to the book. Each limit fills only at your price or better, and resting orders may be charged at the maker rate shown on the exchange's fee page. Watch the open orders tab so that unfilled orders do not sit forgotten while the market moves.

Compare with other venues before you move tokens

The same token may trade on more than one exchange and on decentralized exchanges. Compare the visible depth and price on the venues you have access to. Moving tokens to an exchange takes a deposit, and the exchange must support the token on the network you hold it on; check the deposit page for the token and network first. On a DEX, read the quote's price impact and remember gas fees, which can be significant for small amounts.

Watch for unlock dates and record the sale

Project tokens often have scheduled unlocks or reward distributions that bring new supply to market. The project's own announcements usually list them. Selling just before a large unlock can be easier than selling just after, when many holders try to exit at once. Once you sell, export the trade confirmations with date, price, quantity and fees, and note how you originally received the tokens, since that context is often needed later for your records.
