Buying the crypto you need for NFT purchases: choosing orders that avoid overpaying

Guides · 2026-10-01

People who plan to buy NFTs often need a particular coin to pay on a marketplace. In a rush, they buy it with a market order, sometimes on a thin pair, and pay more than the fair price before the purchase even starts. Gas costs, marketplace fees and price swings then come on top. This guide focuses on the first step: how to choose between market and limit orders on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget when acquiring the coin, how to spot hidden spread and how to keep a clear record. It does not discuss which NFTs to buy.

Know how much you really need

Work out the amount of the coin required, including a small margin for network costs, and avoid buying much more than you need. Prices of the coin can move quickly, so a plan for a specific purchase helps you avoid impulse decisions. If the purchase is not urgent, there is no need to accept whatever price the market shows at this very second.

Check liquidity before ordering

Open the order book for the pair and look at the gap between the best buy and sell prices and the volume near them. A wide gap or thin volume means a market order is likely to fill at a worse average price than displayed. Some coins trade more actively against one quote currency than another, so check more than one pair if available.

Prefer limit orders when time allows

A limit order lets you set the highest price you will pay. If it does not fill, you can adjust it. For a larger purchase, several smaller limit orders can reduce the effect on price. Remember that open orders can fill later under conditions you no longer want, so review them before closing the app and cancel what you do not need.

Mind convert screens and withdrawal costs

Instant convert features are convenient but may build a spread into the quote, so compare with the order book. Once you hold the coin, check the withdrawal fee and the network supported by your wallet before sending, and send a small test first. Record the price, date and transaction ID of each step so that you can see the true cost of the whole route. Small, documented steps beat a rushed purchase.
