Keeping records for NFT activity when the money starts on an exchange
An NFT trade leaves traces in at least three places. The coin you used was bought on an exchange and withdrawn to your wallet. The mint or purchase happened on-chain from that wallet. The sale, if there was one, appears on a marketplace and then perhaps flows back to the exchange to be converted. Each place has its own history, and none of them tells the full story. A simple record that links them saves hours whenever you need to explain a transaction.
Export the exchange side
On the exchange, export spot trades, deposits and withdrawals for the period. The withdrawals that went to your NFT wallet are the starting point of each trail, so mark them. Note the transaction hash shown in the withdrawal details; it is the link between the exchange record and the on-chain record. If you used several exchanges, export from each one and name the files clearly by exchange and date range.
Pull the wallet history
Use a block explorer for your wallet address to list transactions over the same period. Many explorers allow a CSV export. Match each incoming transfer to an exchange withdrawal using the hash. Then identify mint transactions, marketplace purchases and sales, and transfers between your own wallets. Keep a list of every wallet address you own, because transfers between them should not be mistaken for purchases or sales.
Record each NFT as a line
In a spreadsheet, give each NFT its own line: collection name, token number, the date and cost of acquisition including network fees, and, if sold, the date, sale price and marketplace fees. Add the transaction hashes for acquisition and sale. Linking each NFT to the exchange withdrawal that funded it makes the trail complete. It feels tedious at first but becomes quick after a few entries.
Close the loop on the way back
When proceeds return to the exchange, record the deposit with its hash and the conversion trade. Keep the original export files and a backup of the spreadsheet somewhere other than your phone. Marketplaces can change or disappear, so screenshot or export your marketplace history periodically. For any tax treatment, ask a qualified professional in your country; your job here is to have clean, complete data ready.
Risk boundary: NFT Market Guide
Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
Scenario checkpoint
- Export exchange trades, deposits and withdrawals and mark withdrawals to NFT wallets.
- Match wallet transactions to exchange records using the transaction hash.
- Keep one spreadsheet line per NFT with acquisition and sale details and hashes.
- Record proceeds returning to the exchange and back up all original files.
