Logging perpetual funding payments separately from spot trades
Perpetual contracts have no expiry date, and to keep their price close to the underlying market they use periodic funding payments between long and short positions. Depending on market conditions, you may pay or receive funding at each interval. Each payment is small, so it is easy to ignore, and when funding entries are mixed into the same records as spot trades they disappear into the noise. Over weeks, though, funding can noticeably change the result of a position. This guide explains why keeping a separate funding log is useful and how to do it for positions on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget. It makes no predictions about funding rates and quotes no figures.
Why separate records help
Spot trades and perpetual positions behave differently. A spot purchase has a cost at entry and at exit; a perpetual position can also generate a stream of funding payments for as long as it is open. When these payments sit in a separate log, you can see the total cost of holding each position and compare it with the price result. That makes it far easier to judge whether a strategy is working or whether funding is quietly eroding it.
Where to find funding entries
Each platform shows funding payments in its own history section, often under the derivatives account, transaction log or funding history. Read the help centre on the platform you use to locate it and to understand how often funding is exchanged for the contract you hold. Export or copy entries regularly, because some histories only show a limited period in the app.
A simple log format
For each position, record the contract, direction, opening date and size. Beneath it, list each funding entry with its time and amount, positive or negative. When the position is closed, add up the funding total and write it beside the price result. Keeping the log per position, rather than per day, makes the cost of each decision clear.
Reviewing what you learn
After a few closed positions, compare the funding totals with the price results. If funding regularly takes a large share of the gains, you may be holding positions longer than your approach justifies, or holding in directions where funding is consistently against you. Use the log to make deliberate decisions, and remember that funding rates change with market conditions and cannot be relied upon to stay the same.

Scenario checkpoint
- Keep funding payments in a log separate from spot trades
- Find the funding history section in each platform's help centre
- Record each funding entry under the position it belongs to
- Add the funding total beside the price result when closing
- Review funding totals across closed positions before changing strategy
