Paying for an NFT with money from your bank: the route through an exchange to your wallet

Most NFT marketplaces want crypto in a self-custody wallet on a specific chain, while your money sits in a bank. How to choose the funding method on the exchange, buy the right token and withdraw it to the chain the collection lives on.

The NFT you want is listed in a token on one particular chain, the marketplace only talks to your self-custody wallet, and your money is in a bank account. Between those points sits an exchange, and each hop has its own choices. Getting one wrong means waiting days for a bank transfer to be returned or sending tokens to a chain the marketplace does not use. Planning the route backwards, from the listing to the bank, keeps it short and predictable.

Read the listing before anything else

Open the collection page on the marketplace and note two things: the chain it is on and the token prices are quoted in. Many collections live on a layer-two network rather than the main chain, and some are priced in a wrapped version of a token. Your wallet must be set to that chain, and you will need a little extra of the chain's gas token for fees. Write the chain name and token down exactly as the marketplace shows them.

Pick a funding method on the exchange

In your exchange account, open the deposit or buy crypto section and select your local currency. The methods offered depend on your country and verification level and can include bank transfer, card payments and P2P. Each method's page in the help center shows its current limits, processing time and charges. Bank transfers are usually cheaper but slower; cards are quicker but often cost more. If you plan to buy soon after a mint opens, fund the account a few days early.

Buy the token and check the withdrawal network

Once your local currency arrives, buy the token you need with a limit order or the convert screen, reading the quote before confirming. Then open Withdraw, choose that token and look through the list of networks. Select the one that matches the chain from the listing. If the exchange does not support withdrawals to that layer-two, withdraw on a supported network and use a bridge you have researched, or choose a different exchange that does support it.

Withdraw a test amount, then the rest

Copy your wallet address from the wallet app while it is set to the correct chain, paste it into the withdrawal form and compare the first and last characters. Send a small amount first and watch it arrive in the wallet. Then send the rest, including enough for gas. Before buying the NFT, double-check the collection's contract address against the project's own channels, since fake collections with copied artwork are common on every marketplace.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Note the chain and the token the NFT is priced in from the marketplace listing.
  • Choose a funding method from those your account shows and read its live limits and charges.
  • Select the withdrawal network that matches the collection's chain, not just the token name.
  • Send a test amount with extra for gas and verify the collection contract before buying.
